Despite what his death certificate says, John was born in Indiana in 1878. His parents were Matilda Rhodes and Samuel Babb, both natives of Ohio.

At the time of the 1880 census John was 3 years old and living in Wolcottville, LaGrange County, Indiana with his widowed mother and his siblings. His siblings include William H.
