J.J. Padden, born in Ireland, was DeRidder High School's band director starting in 1922 to around 1940. He replaced W.R. Burnham in November 1922. Padden was a fixture in the community and played with either the school band, or regional musical groups and orchestras. He and wife, Amelia, both died in 1947 and are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in DeRidder. In the 1930s, Padden and some other local musicians could be heard on radio broadcasts out of Beaumont, Texas.
