Helmi was born in Helsinki, Finland.
Her father came to this country first, around 1900, Helmi and her mother arrived a year later.
They settled in Minnesota, where Frank was born, then decided to move to Ma., where their other children were born.
Unfortunately, Helmi lost her hearing at a young age.
Her parents didn't know about deaf schools until a friend told them about the Randolf Convent School, when she was 11.
She had to leave school when she was 15, to help take care of her family, when her father was taken ill. Her mother went to work as a laundry ironer.
