Leonard was a 23-year-old smokejumper when he and 14 other smokejumpers parachuted into Mann Gulch to fight a fire that started on August 5, 1949 and lasted for five days. A few minutes later, a 'blow-up' caused the fire to grow by 3,000 acres, killing 12 of the smokejumpers and one other firefighter.

Body Of Forest Fire Victim Is Brought Home To Derry Twp.

The body of a 23-year-old Derry Twp. man who was fatally burned while fighting a forest tire in Montana a week ago arrived at tha local depot at 1:30 a. m. today, and was to be taken to his late home this afternoon.

Funeral services for the accident victim, Leonard L. Piper, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy L. Piper, of Blalrsvllle R. D. will be held at the Hebron Lutheran Church, Blairsvllle, at 3:30 p. m. Sunday. Friends will be received at the Piper home and brief services at the home at 1:45 p. m. will precede the church services. In the absence of tha Rev. James Frank, pastor, services will be in charge of the Rev. William Zundell, former pastor. Interment will be in the Bethel Church cemetery.

Leonard, a grandson of Mrs. Anns Poole Mlkesell and a nephew of Mrs. Marie Drum, both of Latrobe, was s student at Montana State University, Missoula, Mont. He was burned to death along with 12 others who parachuted to areas of the fires, near Helena, Montana, when the wind changed and trapped the fire fighters.
