Comrade of the bright trails we knew when life was new.
Pal and friend of childhood--my heart beats high for you.
For though you've left the gay trails we knew and loved so long,
I still can hear your footsteps--the echo of your song.
(2)
Your trail climbs far and high and true, unfettered, wild and free.
Your spirit soars on wings of flame into eternity.
While I with stumbling steps go on through dark and storm and fear,
Without your smile that comforted, your courage, and your cheer.
(3)
Where e'er you are, where e'er you go, where e'er your steps may wend,
Can you look back from trails afar and bid my heart to mend?
Can you look back on my dim trail, oh childhood friend and brother,
And give me strength, and zest for life, as when we were together?
(4)
The echo of now silent steps must lead me on alone.
And coming back through long dim years, bring firmness to my own.
Although our trails are parted--and mine with sadness rife,
I know your love is always mine--through time, through death, through life.
