Alma was born in Fort Alma which was a fort in the territory of Utah and later became the town of Monore after the Indian uprising. Alma was named after Fort Alma as he was the first baby born there. His parents, John William Bohman & Maria Christina Soderstrom, were converts and Swedish immigrants. They were sent to colonize and build Fort Alma in Sevier county, Utah. He married Susan McIntyre Warnock 20 February 1896 in the Manti Temple.
