Enlisted age 25 years December 12, 1863 at Johnsburg mustered in as Private with Company B. 148th New York Infantry on January 12, 1863 wounded June 18, 1864 at Petersburg Virginia transferred to Company G. 100th New York Infantry on June 22, 1865. Discharged June 25, 1865 at Richmond Virginia of wounds received June 18, 1864 at Petersburg Virginia. He was wounded in the hip.
There is no record as being captive in Prison.

George served during the Civil War, the only son to survive. He was taken prisoner. He moved into the Old Soldier's Home in Bath, NY in the last years of his life. He is buried there.
George Austin was also mentioned in Ted Aber's History of Hamilton County.
