Sarah came from Michigan to Belleville, NJ shortly after her husband William died in 1796, bringing 8 children with her. She bought land on the Passaic River and built a grand home at 125 Main Street.[NJ records call this the Alexander Macomb house;Sarah owned the house until 1815.] This cemetery fronts on the street forming the southern boundary of her land, now named William St.,perhaps in honor of her deceased husband.
Her nephew Alexander Macomb, Jr. (later Maj.Gen. A. Macomb) was attending The Academy in Newark where he lived with his aunt and uncle, Jane Macomb and Robert Kennedy. Sarah soon had him come to live in her home. He and her daughter Catherine developed a deep friendship which led to their marriage on July 18, 1803 at Christ Church, where several of Sarah's children were married. Many of Sarah's grandchildren were born in her home, as a number of her children and relatives were notable members of the military establishment, hence away from family. At least *52 of her descendants and their spouses are buried at Arlington. The only relatives buried here are her Grandson, Commodore William Danforth Whiting: Memorial# 7809640 and his wife Jane Stewart Whiting. Her widowhood spanned 53 years.
* that number is much larger now, 2014. I have not attempted to count them.
