Amelia married William Henry Devenny on March 6, 1916. She married Charles Clinton Rathbun on December 24, 1928. Her father was Thaddeus Troupe Turner. Her mother, Alice Barker, was the oldest sister of Omar S. Barker and Elliott S. Barker, well-known writers of authentic western stories and life in early New Mexico. Their sister Grace was a poet. Alice Barker died when Amelia was four. Amelia's stepmother was Louise Ground.

Amelia was a schoolteacher in several parts of New Mexico before she got married. From about 1932 till she retired in about 1956, she taught school in Raton, New Mexico.
