PLEASANT HILL TIMES December 24, 1915
Wm. Burton Dead
Wm. Burton, who had been ill at the home of his son, Carl, in this city several weeks, died Tuesday morning at 1:45, his death being due to a complication of bronchial pneumonia, dropsy and other troubles. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Christian Church of which Mr. Burton had been a member, and burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The Rev C. B. Wait was the minister. Mr. Burton, 78 years old, was born May 1, 1837 in Dearborn County, Indiana. He was married in that county to Miss Mary Ballard on his birthday, May 1, 1858, and seven children were born to their union. Three survive - Mrs. Joe Chandler, Sedalia; Edward and Carl of this city. The other four children died in infancy. The mother is also living, but in very feeble health. In 1870 Mr. and Mrs. Burton moved to Pleasant Hill from Indiana and remained here until "Grasshopper Year", in 1874. Then the country being stripped bare by the plague of insects, they returned to their old home in Indiana and spent three years, thereupon once more returning to Pleasant Hill, residing here or in this vicinity until some 12 or 13 years ago when they located at Adrian, there to live until failing health induced a third return to Pleasant Hill some weeks ago where they could be in the kindly care of their children. Mr. Burton's illiness had been known to be hopeless for several weeks, but until very recently, at that, he was able to be up and around the house. He realized his condition, but faced the inevitable calmly and with resignation. His son Edward, says, "Father was a big-hearted man and always ready to do his part," and that, we should say, is highest praise.
