Elson came to Linn County in 1848 looking for land to settle. He bought 330 acres at $1.25 per acre, located 1 mile NE of Central City. He built a log cabin and some out-buildings. Later he built a large frame house and a barn. On Nov 8, 1854 he married Mary Ann McQueen. She was born Aug 6, 1833 in Clark County, Ind, the daughter of William McQueen, an early settler in the Prairieburg, IA area. They had 7 children: Frank (1855), Flora (1857), Sarah (1859) George (1861), William (1864), Manly (1866) and Allica (1871). Elson died May 3, 1876. Some time later the farm was divided between their 4 living children, and Mary moved to Central City. She died in 1915.
