Mary was probably born around 1898, the child of John Smith and mother unknown. She and John Gillon were married June 16, 1808, in Canongate in Edinburgh, Midlothian; marriage 16 Jun 1808 Canongate, Edinburgh, Midlothian: "John Gillon shoemaker and Mary Smith daughter of the late John Smith, labourer, gave up their names for marriage." Canongate is a Parish in the city of Edinburgh in the County of Midlothian. A Treasury account in the same source shows John and Mary paying 5 Pence sterling, the marriage as listed as private and irregular. All the marriage records were either under Proclamation or "irregular." One reason could be that the couple didn't announce their marriage for the usual period of time.(Banns) Or it could be that they were Baptists and not of the State Church. Many other marriages in the same register were listed as "irregular."

A death for Mary Gillon in 1827 is found in Falkirk records. Her last child, Mary, was born in 1827. It could be that the mother died in childbirth. John remarried in November of that same year, a common practice when a man needed a wife to care for his small children.
