Jerry Arch Bell passed away on January 4, 2011, twelve days before his 89th birthday. Jerry was born into a wonderful and loving family on January 16, 1922 in Fort Smith, Arkansas as the youngest of the four children of Arch Leonard Bell and Marguerite Kelly Bell.

Jerry's family moved to Austin in the early 1930's when he was a young boy so that the Bell children could live at home and attend The University of Texas. Jerry attended Newman School (now called St. Austin's School) and was an altar boy at St. Austin's Catholic Church where he remained a parishioner for almost 70 years until his death.

Jerry graduated from Austin High School and then started at The University of Texas. Shortly after the United States entered World War II, Jerry volunteered to join the U.S. Army and served overseas in Egypt until the conclusion of the War.

Jerry then returned to The University of Texas where he graduated in 1948. While at The University he was a member and officer of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, where he made and kept a number of lifetime friends.

Immediately after graduation he went to work as a life insurance agent for Southland Life Insurance Company where he remained his entire career and where he enjoyed great professional success as a regular member of its "Million Dollar Round Table."

On November 26, 1949, Jerry married the love of his life, Beverly Anne Nash. Beverly and Jerry were married for forty-eight wonderful years until Beverly died of cancer in 1997. Jerry and Beverly had six children and nineteen grandchildren whom he loved very much. He is survived by Jerry Arch Bell, Jr., and his wife Mary of Austin, and their children Julia, John, and Molly; Philip Nash Bell of Corpus Christi and his wife Jane and their children, Nash, Virginia, Jerry, and Kathleen; Mary Catherine Holt and her husband John of Kerrville, and their children, Shannon, John Jr., and Beverly; Beverly Anne Patton and her husband Ed of San Antonio, and their children, Grier and Laura; Sheila Jackson and her husband Dr. Blair Jackson of San Antonio, and their children, Richard, Kelly, and Chris; and Christopher Kelly Bell and his wife Karla of Austin, and their children, Brian, Andrew, Sarah, and Kate.

Jerry dearly loved his brother and sisters and their families: Kelly Bell of Midland, Marguerite ("Peggy") Brown of Washington D.C., and Mary Julia ("Kiddie") Eidman of Houston. His brother and sisters predeceased him.

Jerry was virtually a lifelong resident of Austin who always felt fortunate to live there. He was one of the early presidents of The Headliners Club and was a current or past member of the Admiral's Club, Coronet Club, The Supper Club of Austin and Tarry House. He was a devout Catholic, and he and Beverly were members of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. Jerry also always had great feelings for Seton Hospital where all of his children were born and where he served as a volunteer in the cancer unit for many years late in his life. Jerry was also a lifelong baseball fan and a devoted and loyal fan of the Houston Astros through thick and thin. During his last years, he watched on television every Houston Astros game, including all Spring Training games.

The family expresses its sincere appreciation to Jerry's long-time and beloved physician, Scott Ream, M.D., and the staff of the Intensive Care Unit at Seton Medical Center who were wonderful during his last days.

The family requests that any memorials be made to either Hospice Austin, 4107 Spicewood Springs Road, Austin, Texas, 78759; the Seton Fund, 1201 West 38th Street, Austin, Texas, 78705; or St. Austin School Endowment, 1911 San Antonio St, Austin, Texas 78705.

The family is planning a visitation on Thursday, January 6, 2011, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 North Lamar, Austin, Texas, and a memorial Mass on Friday, January 7, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Austin Catholic Church, 2026 Guadalupe, Austin, Texas. There will be parking available in the garage on San Antonio Street off of MLK across from St. Austin's School.

The Bell family grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers. There will be a private burial service Friday morning.
