Smith graduated from Roaring Springs High School in 1955. She married Jackie R. Smith in May of 1954 in Roaring Springs, Texas. In 1969, Shirley moved to Alamogordo and, later, to Ruidoso. Here, they owned and operated Decorator's Studio.
She returned to Motley County in 1999 to make her home in Matador, where she owned and operated Callico Treasures. She was active in the Matador Chamber of Commerce, several local clubs, and was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Surviving family members include her husband, Jackie, of Matador; son, Steve; daughter Shirlene Cooper of Deridder, La.; brothers, Kenneth Ashley of Roaring Springs and Roger Carl Ashley of Sudan; sister, Joyce Meredith of Roaring Springs; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
