John Kepford served in Co. B, 47th PA Inf. from 9 July to 14 Aug 1863, and re-enlisted as a Private in Co. D, 78th PA Inf. (2nd Organization) on 18 Feb 1865. Promoted to Corporal on 3 June, and discharged on 28 Aug 1865 while a patient at Mower General Hospital at Philadelphia. Listed in the 1870 and 1880 census in East Pennsboro Twp, Cumberland Co PA. He married Sarah Alice Miller, born 1850 in PA, died 7 June 1886 in Malden, Bureau Co IL. They had 12 children. After his wife's death the 4 youngest children were left in care of the Soldiers Orphans Home, Normal IL. John subsequently lived in Nebraska, Dakota Terr., and Idaho. He entered the Idaho Soldiers Home in Nov 1917, at age 72, and lived there until his death. He was one of only 3 surviving members of A.T. McReynolds Post No. 5, G.A.R. of Coeur d'Alene. The accompanying photograph is believed to be John Kepford; the photograph of his gravestone was taken by Herbert Rickards in October 1988.
