Columbus Monroe (Lummie) Thompson, 79, died last Friday afternoon at his home near Reidsville.

He was born January 27, 1871 in the South Thompson Community of Toombs County, where he lived for 35 years. In 1907, he married Annie Ryals, daughter of the late Henry Ryals of the Elza Community of Tattnall County and in 1910 bought a tract of timberland in the Baggs Mill Section of Tattnall County, 7 miles out from Reidsville where he settled and built his home.

The active part of his life was devoted to saw-milling and farming and until the last recent years of his retirement, and his general health had been failing for about three years finally succumbing to a heart attack.

He was a member of the Baptist Church, united with the South Thompson Baptist Church more than 60 years and never moved that membership.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Howard of Alma, Haden of Miami, Fla., and Ernest of Atlanta; four daughters, Mrs. E.C. Akins of Register, Mrs. U.L. Harris of Lake Wales, Fla., Mrs. G.W. Holmes of Savannah and Mrs. J.M. Smith of Reidsville; one brother, Hilton Thompson of Lyons; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 P.M. at the Reidsville Baptist Church with the Rev. J.D. Rabun of Lyons officiating, assisted by Rev. R.C. Howard, pastor of the Reidsville Baptist Church and Rev. Hoke O. Hatcher, pastor of the Reidsville Methodist Church.

Active pallbearers were Felder Jordan, Clyde Jordan, Collis Thompson, Prince Thompson, M.M. Ryals, Jr., and Curtis Stephens. Honorary pallbearers were J.R. Cheney, W.T. Tootle, Joshua Beasley, Ellison Smith, Bernice Conley, DeWitt Tatum, G.B. Everett, J.T. Grice, C.L. Cowart, Rufus Jones, Dan Waller and Grady Bland.
