Virgil was the son of William B. Plymale and Elizabeth Paxton, was the 5th-oldest of their 10 known children, and was born in Monroe Co., VA (now WV), but was raised in Alleghany Co., VA. A number of his records are under his middle name, Stewart (or Stuart, Stu) instead of his first name. Two events (the 1860 census and his obituary) were recorded with his middle name as "A.S.", but what the initial "A" stood for isn't known yet.He married Sarah A. Craft on 27 May 1860 in Alleghany Co. She was the daughter of William Craft and his 2nd wife, Elizabeth Oiler/Oyler (William died in 1842). In 1852, this Sarah's half-brother, also named William Craft, married Virgil's sister, Sarah Ann Plymale, in Alleghany Co. Virgil and wife Sarah moved their family to Gallia Co., OH in the 1860s, probably after his father's estate was probated (he died in June 1863), and they remained in Gallia until their deaths, possibly travelling to Alleghany Co. for visits and funerals (his mother died there in July 1869; her mother died there in February 1884).To Virgil and Sarah's union were born 11 children: Charles W., John Matt, Alice Evelyn, Rosetta Belle, Orinda Anna "Annie", Divers E., David Edward, Jennetta Frances "Nettie", James Alfred, Hattie May, and Leroy Curtis "Roy". By 1900, two had passed away: son Charles (before 1870), and daughter Orinda in 1897 (wife of James H. Dickey). [Note: See Sarah's memorial about her 1900 census numbers of children born/died.]Virgil's age at death was 48y 5m 6d, which calculates to the birthdate stated in his obituary below, published on 21 February 1888 (Tuesday) in the Gallipolis Bulletin newspaper, transcribed by Sandy L. Milliron for galliagenealogy.org (obits are in alpha order by surname):"Death of Mr. V. A. S. Plymale On Saturday morning, Mr. V. A. S. Plymale, of Clay township, died suddenly of heart disease. He was born in Monroe County, Virginia , September 12, 1839. For many years he had been a resident of Ohio, and for twenty-seven years was a consistent member of the M. E. Church. The funeral services were held at Ohio Chapel on Sunday, with a large attendance of relatives and friends, the funeral sermon being preached by the Rev. Jesse Ingles. The burial took place at the Plymale grave-yard, Messers. C. Skees & Co., officiating. Mr. Plymale leaves a widow and ten children.
