Daughter of George Washington Mooney and Mary C. Prescott of Holderness. In 1870 she was living with her parents in Holderness age 21 and had siblings George H. age 24, Mary A. age 16 and Lorin W. age 9. Her father was a farmer.

She married James Willis Cox in 1871.

In 1880 Josie was living with her parents in Holderness, age 32 and had a son Adelbert W. age 7. Her husband was not in the household.

She married Erastus C. Johnston 1896 as his second wife. He was originally from Vermont and resided in Washington DC. In the 1900 census Josie was enumerated as born July 1848 and had been married 3 years. He was born 1842 in Vermont and she in New Hampshire. His occupation was that of a clerk.

She was separated from him at the time of her death and under the care of her son Adelbert Cox. Erastus was 67, single, and living in a rooming house in 1910 and died in 1914 in DC.

Obit provided by BL Hughes: Mrs. Josie A. Johnson of Washington, D. C. who was the daughter of the late George W. Mooney died and was buried at Holderness Squam Bridge Cemetery last Friday. It is thought she had a shock. She was a woman of remarkably good qualities and her friends mourn their loss deeply, she being very dear to them. The Ashland Citizen, July 14, 1906, p8.
