GALENA, Ill. -- Leroy "Sam" Armstrong, 81, of Pomeroy, Iowa, formerly of Galena, passed away Monday, July 27, 2009.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 31, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Galena. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded at graveside. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Michael Loterbour-Powers Funeral Home, Pomeroy. Friends also may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday July 30, at Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena.
He was born on April 26, 1928, in the Knoke, Iowa, area, son of Charles and Zelma Armstrong.
After high school, Leroy served in the Army for two years. He then took a job with the railroad and transferred to Galena, where he met and married Virginia Beadle in 1952; she preceded him in death in 1988.
He was a member of the Eagles Club, the Elks Club and the Knights of Columbus. He was a 20-year veteran of the volunteer fire department in Galena.
Leroy was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan.
Surviving are sons, Mark, of Lena, Alan, of Akron, Iowa, and Jeff, of Webster City; two daughters, Lynn, of Gurdon, Ark., and Jan, of Ontario, Canada; and 13 grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by a son, Ronald, in 1981.
