Janet Rose Garey, 94, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 6, 2011, at Adams House, Tampa, Florida. A loving mother and a deeply kind person, Janet was a faithful Christian and a selfless volunteer. She was born in Taylor, Texas, on April 10, 1916, the daughter of Walter Bruce and Johnnie Belle Smith, and grew up in San Antonio, Texas, with her sisters, Christine and Marguerite. During World War II, she moved to San Francisco, California, where she volunteered for the American Red Cross. After the war, she moved to the Toledo area, where she met the love of her life, Franklin L. Garey. Janet was one of the first women in local Toledo television, starring in live advertisements for Lane Drug stores in the early 1950s. She was a Past Worthy Matron of Lotus Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, a Past President of District 6, O.E.S., a Past Deputy Grand Matron of District 6, O.E.S., and a Past Grand Page to Ohio's Worthy Grand Patron, Dick Oldham. She was a past president of Chapter BN of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and Past President of the Women's Educational Club. She read for over eighteen years on the SCAN radio network for the visually impaired at the Toledo Sight Center, was a long time Red Cross blood donor, and was a long time election booth worker. She is a former member of St. Luke's, Divinity, and Bethlehem Lutheran Churches, where she served as a worship assistant, sang in the choir, and took communion to members in nursing homes. She was president of the Oakdale Elementary School Mother's Club and the editor of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Messenger newsletter for over 10 years. Janet retired from the Toledo Municipal Court, where she was a deputy clerk in the Trusteeship Department. She is survived by her sons, Robert (Terri) of Tampa, Florida, and Thomas (Barbara Horvath) of Sylvania, Ohio; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters; her husband, Franklin, and son, Paul. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2 to 9 pm in the Eggleston Meinert & Pavley Funeral Home, Oregon Chapel, where services will be conducted on Friday at 9:00 am. Order of Eastern Star services will be held on Thursday at 7:00 pm. Interment will be in Willow Cemetery, Oregon, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be donated to the Sight Center of Northwest Ohio.
