Philip Frank was the eldest of seven known children of Johann Mardin (John Martin in English) Franck/Frank (c1752-1802) and Barbara Bofs/Boss (c1760- (1847?)), who married c1780 in presumably Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina. It is not known where Barbara is buried. Philip is believed to ahve been born in the section of Rowan County, North Carolina that became Davidson County in 1819.

Philip married Anna Mary (went by Mary) Hedrick (1798-1880) in c1814 in presumably Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina. Philip and Mary were the parents of nine known children, namely:

1. Alexander Frank (1815-1894)
2. George Frank (1816-1902)
3. Nancy Elizabeth Frank Headrick (1818-1897)
4. Anna Christina Frank Boss (1820-1898)
5. Theophilus "Theo" Frank (1823-1885)
6. Philip Frank Jr. (1826-1894)
7. Mary Barbara Frank Headrick (1828-1894)
8. Benjamin Hedrick Frank (1831-1912)
9. John M. Frank (1834-1885)

The names of 54 of Philip's grand-children are known, though this listing is probably incomplete.

In about 1869 the widow Mary left Davidson County, North Carolina and moved to Dent County, Missouri to live with her son John. The children Alexander, George, Theo and Philip Jr. stayed in North Carolian. The children Nancy, Mary, Benjamin and John moved to Dent County, Missouri. The daughter Anna moved to Brown County, Illinois.

In 1850 Mary was living at the Southern Division, Davidson County, North Carolina with sons George, Philip, Benjamin and John. In 1860 Mary was living at the Southern Division, Davidson County, North Carolina with son John M. Frank, Vina Frank Andrew J. Frank (age 1). In 1870 Mary Frank was living with her son John at Dent County, Missouri.
