PIONEER AREA
RESIDENT DIES
HERE TODAY

Jesus Trujillo, whose family homesteaded in the Roswell area in territorial days and who had lived in Loving for the past 47 years, died in a local hospital this morning at the age of 80.

The Rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. Thursday in the West Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, but other arrangements are not yet complete. Burial will be in Carlsbad Cemetery.

Trujillo was born April 1, 1880 in Marfa, Tex. As a young man he settled in Franklin (now El Paso), and later moved to Las Cruces. He came to Carlsbad, and worked on construction of the first courthouse here, before settling in early Roswell. He worked for the Joyce-Pruitt Co., one of the first stores there.

According to one early account, it was decided to name the county in which Roswell was located after the first family homesteading at the city. A man named Chaves claimed to have settled there a few days earlier than Trujillo, and the county was named after him.

Trujillo was widely acquainted in the Southwest, C.B. Eddy, after whom first the city and later the county were named, was a close friend.

From Roswell he moved to Loving, where he farmed for a few years and then owned and operated his own grocery. After quitting operation of the store he went to work for U.S. Potash Co. in their refinery near Loving, and worked there until his retirement in 1945.

Survivors include a son, B.M. (Nino) Trujillo; two daughters, Mrs. Mickey Contrerras and Mrs. Juanita Armendarez, both of Loving; a brother, Geronimo Trujillo of Roswell; a sister, Mrs. Josefina T. Vega of San Jose, Calif.; 16 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren.
