The 1st Iowa Cavalry was the first regiment of 3 year volunteer cavalry accepted into the Union forces. The recruits owned their own horses and equipment. This regiment was involved in a multitude of expeditions, battles, skirmishes in Missouri and Arkansas as well as campaigns against Quantrills guerrilla forces.
