She was born in Lincoln on Nov. 22, 1923, to Hazel and Theodore Kiesselbach. She attended the University of Nebraska until World War II interrupted her education in 1943, and she moved to San Francisco to work for the Office of War Information. She received her college degree 42 years later, graduating from UNL in 1985 in Great Plains Studies.
In 1945, when her college sweetheart, William (Hank) Greene, returned from the front lines in France, they married. She then worked as a reporter for the Lincoln Journal newspaper before retiring to raise six children.
She became a political activist for the Democratic Party and was Nebraska publicity chairman for John F. Kennedy's presidential campaign. She was appointed State Safety Director by Gov. Frank B. Morrison, and later was elected to the Nebraska State Board of Education where she served for 12 years. She was president, vice president and secretary of the Ashland-Greenwood Public Schools Foundation, and was a founder and president of the Ashland Arts Council for 13 years. In 2003, she was named Queen of the Ashland Stir-Up.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hank, and by her three siblings, Max, Theodore and Katherine.
She is survived by her children, Molly Lairamore of Las Vegas, Nev.; Susan Dale of Ashland; Sarah Greene of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Chris Greene of Boulder, Colo.; Julie Greene of Silver Spring, Md. and Alex Greene of Memphis, Tenn. in addition to her "adopted" daughter, Donna Stevens, of Manchester, Mo.; 10 grandchildren, Ben, Danny, Walker, Kevan, Fritz, Amanda, Dylan, Sophie, Henry and Hattie.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 17, at the First Congregational Church in Ashland with Rev. Abel Sisco, clergy.
Memorials may be sent to the Ashland Arts Council, the Ashland-Greenwood Schools Foundation, the First Congregational Church of Ashland or the Unitarian Church of Lincoln.
