Nellie gave birth to their first child, a daughter, Mary Elizabeth (nicknamed "Bessie") in October 1886. She gave birth to another child, a boy, in 1888, but he survived only days or hours, and his name is unknown. A third child, named James Francis (and nicknamed "Buzz"), was born in 1889, and a fourth, another infant boy of unknown name, survived only a few weeks. Nellie's father, a Civil War veteran, died in 1892, and she died of typhoid fever in 1894, in Kansas City, Kansas.
