Gavin was born in Desboro, Grey Co.,ON.He was one of nine children born to Alexander and Isabella(McBain)Stephen. He was married twice, first to Elizabeth "Libby" Moore,and then to Jemima "Mima"(Webb). He had two boys, and one girl with Libby and two girls with Mima. Gavin was living in Miami, Manitoba while married to Libby, as that's where the three children were born and where Libby died. He then moved to Brandon at least briefly as that's where he married Libby's cousin Jemima (Webb)in 1905. They then moved to Lajord, SK, where they ran the post office and where their two daughters were born.
Moving further west they ended up in the Peace River area, spending time in Bluesky (where Mima's parents lived for awhile) before settling closer to Grande Prairie. After Mima's death in 1925, and once the girls were grown and married Gavin retired to Victoria, BC where he passed away in 1958.
