MISS LUCY A. ARTHUR
- Miss Lucy A. Arthur passed away
Friday, Jan. 4, 1952. Her death came
at the Methodist hospital where she
was taken on December 22 from her
home in Brooklyn, N. Y., where she
and her brother have made their
home for many years. She had been
a wheelchair invalid for many years.
She was born in the little village of
Bussevill, near Janesville, Wisc.
on Sept. 14, 1857, being aged 94
years, 11 months and 20 days at the
time of her death.
In 1870 her family moved to Caw-
ker City with others, including a
cousin of hers, E. Harrison Cawker,
one of the founders of Cawker City.
The family home was at the west
edge of town, south of the present
Decker place, where Mr. Arthur
operated a saw mill. She attended
school here and also began her
teaching career in Cawker City. She
also taught later, in 1898-99.
Later she went to Beloit as teach-
er and finally as principal, termina-
ting her duties in the middle 1890's.
After that she attended and gradua-
ted from Chicago University, and
also attended Columbia University in
New York. In 1904 she began teach-
ing in Chicago--she taught Austin
High School for a while, and for
20 years at McKinley High School.
Somewhere around 1916, she was
chosen as the representative of the
Chicago teachers and honored at a
banquet of the Chamber of Com-
merce.
Her education also included two
years at Edinburgh Ladies College
in Edinburgh, Scotland, where she
took some special studies such as
German and painting.
Funeral services were held Jan. 6
and interment was made at her old
home in Kankakee, Ill. Surviving
relatives include one brother, Arthur,
the youngest of the family, who is
now 80 years of age.
