As a young man, Robert set out for the Pacific Northwest, where by 1920 he was employed in a lumber mill in Pacific county, Washington, and was married to Maude, a stitcher in a box factory. Maude died in 1929 and by 1930 Robert was working on a pipe line in King county, Washington.
On 12 May 1947, Robert married Frances M. Scott, in Neodesha, Kansas. Robert worked as a carpenter in Redlands, California, and in Arkansas before returning to Neodesha.
