MOOREVILLE – John Ruth Umfress, 97, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Monday, Oct. 21, 2013. She was born in Lee County on Dec. 26, 1915, to the late John and Earle Duncan and was a graduate of Draughn’s Business College in Memphis. She had lived in Mooreville until approximately four years ago when she moved to Traceway Manor.
Ruth was the first female manager for United Cities Gas Company in Tupelo. Ruth worked with the Lee County School Systems until the age of 88. Ruth enjoyed working weekends at the Tupelo Flea Market selling baseball cards and Fenton Glass. She was also an avid Atlanta Braves fan.
Ruth was the oldest living member at Boguefala Baptist Church where she devoted her time as the church Sunday school secretary for over 40 years.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, at Boguefela Baptist Church with. Burial will be in Boguefala Cemetery. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is entrusted with arrangements.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Earle Duncan; two brothers, Will Hoyle Duncan and Trice Duncan.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today, Oct. 22, 2013, at the funeral home and will continue on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until service time at the church.
