My Uncle Ben was a merchant marine and sailed all over the world. We lived in the port city of Houston, Texas and whenever he landed there he would give us a call. It did not matter if it was 2 am, the whole family would load up and drive to the port to pick him up. Once we were back at the house the adults, his mother Kate Rhodes, brother Jesse and sister-in-law Violet would sit up the rest of the night talking and drinking coffee. Seaport brand was always kept in the pantry for Ben. Uncle Ben would pick up me and my brother Glenn and carry us to bed. We always requested that he rattle his false teeth for us. Amid giggles and hugs we would say good night. I loved my Uncle Ben.
