E.G. Crossing Accident Brings Death To Two

S.N.R.R. Locomotive and Automobile Collide At East Gridley Crossing

Mrs. J. H. Jones, 70, a resident of the Gridley district 38 years, was instantly killed and her husband, well known Gridley farmer, died eight hours later from injuries sustained in an automobile-locomotive crash at the East Gridley crossing of the Sacramento Northern R.R. a mile and a half east of Gridley at 9:45 a.m. yesterday.

Mr. and Mrs. Jones were enrouute to Oroville and conflicting stories by witnesses make it difficult to determine just what happened. Mrs. R. C. Buck, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jones, stated that the coroner's office advised her that her father evidently drove his machine in front of the train. The motorman was heard to say that when he first noticed the car it had stopped a few feet from the tracks and Mrs. Jones had alighted from the car. A few seconds later, he said, the car lurched forward into the path of the locomotive. Mrs. Jones was struck in the head and was thrown to the west of the tracks to the north side of the highway. The car was dragged a distance of one hundred and fifty feet north, Mr. Jones remaining in the driver's seat. Another version is that Mrs. Jones was thrown from the car when the collision occurred.

Ida Alberta Jones was a native of Brigham City, Utah. The family came to Gridley in 1907 with the first Mormon settlers and located on the Colusa road west of town. Survivors include three sons, Ivor Jones of Fairfax, Stirling Jones of Sacramento, Elwood Jones of Los Angeles; four daughters, Mrs Irene Buck of Gridley, Alberta Shaffer of Ventura, Mildred Ferrin of Chico, Linnie Elwell of Marsville; two brothers David L. Smith of Gridley, Arthur Smith of Georgetown, Idaho; Nellie Larsen of Salt Lake and Elsie Larsen of Menan, Idaho.

Mr. Jones, who was removed to the offices of Dr. Hollis Carey after the accident, suffered a crushed chest and head injury. So critical was his injury that it was considered inadvisable to attempt to get him to a hospital. Mr. Jones was a native of Montpelier, Idaho. In addition to the children he is survided by a brother, Frank Jones of Montpelier and a sister, Daisy Nelson of Sonora, California.
