John Carrol said he moved with his family to Tishomongo Co. MS when he was about 10. Age 20 a neighbor came by with a covered wagon and J. Carrol hitched a ride to Illinois. (The family may have already been in KY at the time.) John Carrol served as private in Co B, 29th Reg of Illinois Infantry and fought in the Battle of Mobile Bay on the side of the Union in the Civil War.
He married Lucinda Darnell in Mt. Vernon, IL on 4 Jun 1862. The anniversary was celebrated in June and Lucinda's obituary says June, but the Illinois State Marriage Record says JAN. The marriage record also gives his name as John H. HOLLOWAY and his military record spells the name HOLLOWAY while older family members insist it should be spelled HOLLAWAY. Some children spell the name HOLLAWAY, others HOLLOWAY. Researchers need to check both spellings.
Carrol and Lucinda had 10 children. Willie, Frank and Edgar died very young. Alvilda died an infant. We have not located these children's graves.
He farmed Elk Prairie Township in Jefferson Co and they retired to Waltonville. Lucinda died in 1911. Carrol's obituary says he suffered a stroke. At time of his death he was blind.
NOTE:
The cemetery is now known as South Hickory Hill.
