Educational Leader Here Dies at 81 – Mrs. Mary Comegys Funeral Saturday

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary [sic] Pierson Comegys, 81, local educational
leader and former Caddo Parish School Board member, who died early Thursday
morning at her home, 2300 Line Ave., will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St.
Mark's Episcopal Church.

The Rev. J. Lawrence Plumley, rector, will officiate. Burial will be in Forest
Park Cemetery under the direction of Osborn Funeral Home.

Mrs. Comegys, who had lived here since 1902, is survived by her husband, Dr.
Thomas M. Comegys, the first dentist to establish practice here.

A native of Natchitoches, she was the daughter of the late Judge and Mrs. David
Pierson. Mrs. Comegys was an early leader in the field of education here and
organized and headed the first Shreveport Parent-Teacher Assn.

She served on the Caddo School Board from 1931 to 1934 and was the first woman
candidate for the State Board of Education. She had been active in church
affairs at St. Mark's Episcopal Church until about two years ago. She had been
in ill health since that time.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Comegys is survived by two sons, Dr. David P.
Comegys and Thomas M. Comegys Jr., both of Shreveport; one daughter, Mrs.
Dorothy Comegys Garber, wife of bandleader Jan Garber; two sisters, Mrs. Alice
Kilpatrick, Alexandria, and Mrs. Maude Carriere of San Antonio, Tex.; and four
grandchildren, Janice Garber, Dorothy Lynn and Kay Comegys and David P. Comegys
Jr.

A graduate of Louisiana Normal College, now Northwestern State, Mrs. Comegys
taught school in New Iberia before her marriage to Dr. Comegys in 1902. She was
the sister of the late Dr. Clarence Pierson, Louisiana political figure who
headed the state mental institutions at Pineville and Jackson.

Pallbearers will be Randolph Marston, Ward Marston, Haller Jackson, Milton
Friend, George Woodard, W. M. Comegys Jr., Jack Comegys and Marshall Martin.
