Jack Baras

Jack Leslie Baras, 81, passed away Monday, Sept. 1, 2008.

He attended Baylor School, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1948. He joined Mass. Mutual Life Insurance Co. in 1948; named 'Agent of the Month' two times for the entire Mass. Mutual field force. On June 01, 2000, he was named 'Agent Emeritus' for Mass. Mutual after 52 years with the company. A 'Life Member' of the industry's Million Dollar Round Table for 47 years; past president of the Chattanooga Association of Life Underwriters, member of the Chattanooga Estate Planning Council. He joined the Capital Financial Group in 2005. Jack served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

He was a member of B'nai Zion Synagogue, Highland Park Masonic Lodge 734, Chattanooga Scottish Rite Bodies and over 50 years a member of Alhambra Shrine Temple.

He was preceded in death by his son, Steven Michael Baras; his parents, Hyman Baras and Rae Frank Baras.

His survivors include his wife, Isabelle Baras; daughter, Beth Robin Baras, of Strafford, Vt.; son, Larry Scott Baras; granddaughter, Lindsey Anne Baras, of Knoxville; brother, Buddy Baras, of Cordova, Tenn.; stepdaughter, Mary Scott Laughlin and family, of Atlanta; and stepson, Charles Sowell and family, of Birmingham, Ala.

A graveside service will be held today, Sept. 3, 2008, at 4 p.m. at B'nai Zion Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Steven M. Baras Scholarship Fund at UTC, B'nai Zion Synagogue, the Siskin Children's Institute of Chattanooga or the charity of your choice.
