County Recorder Eli Downing, one of the best known and universally esteemed residents of this county, died this morning, at a sanitarium at Mt. Clemens, Mich. Mr. Downing had been in poor health for the past year and went to the Michigan resort a few days ago to receive treatment in the hope of benefitting his health. Mr. Downing was aged seventy one years and was a native of Delaware county. He removed to this county in 1870 and made his home in Pleasant township, devoting his time to farming. He was a veteran of the Civil War and was an active member of the G.A.R. In politics Mr. Downing was a Democrat and was elected by that party to serve several terms as County Recorder. He is survived by three sons, Dete Downing of Lima; Alvin Lemuel and W.W. Downing, of this town, and three daughters, Mrs. Addie Lance, of this town; Mrs. J. Harvey Foster, of Middle Point, and Mrs. Besse Everett, of Fort Wayne.
