The daugher of Grant Davis and Nancy Tate Anthony, Mary Anne married William Battle Carter (1818-1853) in 1841. Although born in Brownwood, she moved to Social Circle with her husband. After his accidental death, she moved back to Morgan County and lived the last 50 years of her life at the old Carter Place in Brownwood. She operated the stagecoach inn on the old "Sandtown" Road.
