ANADARKO DAILY TRIBUNE

Services for Julia Edge (Chun-Hut) who was the oldest surviving Caddo Indian in the world, were held Monday, February 17 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Anadarko. Father Mike Wheel-ahan officiated with burial in the Binger Cemetery under direction of Gragg Funeral Home.
Julia was born December 15, 1899, in a teepee, in Scott Community, Indian Territory. Her parents were Stanley Edge and Pauine Washington Edge. At the time of her birth, during a heavy snow, her mother was attended only by an elderly medicine man; her father Stanley, having been on a trip with a delegation to Washington DC. Even thought the family had a house made of wood, she was delivered in the teepee, which was much easier to heat and much warmer.
She was the granddaughter of the late Caddo George Washington.
Julia attended school at Riverside Indian School and
St. Patrick's Mission in Anadarko. She was baptized at St. Patricks and was a member of the Native American Church.
Julia was active in the Caddo Culture and history, she shared her teachings and knowledge with scholars and writers and was the subject of many articles in many books.
A wonderful storyteller, Julia had a great sense of humor and loved to tease. She also liked pretty jewelry and clothing.
She passed away Friday, January 14, 1997, in a Lawton Hospital. She had been a resident of the Binger Nursing Home for several years.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Robert Leonard, Harrison Dunlap, Clyde Compton, James Bobb and Dewey Maddox.
She was also preceded in death by her son, Hubert Bobb; one daughter, Annabell Bobb; one brother John Elvern Edge; three sisters, ELizabeth Edge Bentley, Ruby Edge and Hattie Edge Smith and one daughter in law Betsy Leonard.
