Grandfather, tho' mild, quiet and unassuming in manner, was a man of much force of character. He was active in educational and political affairs. He was radical in the temperance cause, a pioneer teetotaler, setting an example not only of his fellow men but one that his sons religiously followed through their lives.

He was a Whig, a Freesoiler and an Abolitionist, standing boldly for the defense of his opinions when it took extraordinary courage to speak openly against slavery. He lost none of his zeal in old age.
