James was secretary to U. S. Senator Kenneth McKellar and two Memphis mayors.

At age thirteen, he lost both legs near the knee as the result of trying to jump aboard a moving freight train.

His last name on his marker is misspelled; it should be Coates.

1915. On the steamer Kate Adams with future wife, Verna Hall. The trip was chaperoned by her mother. Verna's sister, Vera, was also on the trip.

From his photo album dated 1916. He was secretary to Kenneth McKellar who was U.S. Representative and later a U. S. Senator. He returned to Memphis in 1918 and was secretary to two Memphis mayors.

In 1918, Buntyn was not within the city limits of Memphis. It was a small community with a railway stop. Many homes were built on land formerly owned by the Prescott family.
