The trust Mary & Kent established to benefit Carthage, has been ranked among the top 50 in Missouri and has thus far to 2009, contributed over $22,000,000.00 on behalf of Carthaginians. Early on, the attorney handling it was "Bob" Esterly.

Birth: 2nd of two known children in Carrollton, Carroll county, Missouri

Census: 1900, age 11, Carthage, Jasper county, Missouri with father, step-mother & older brother at 930 Oak street.

Mary had a female infant born in 1915 who lived less than one day.

Census: 1920, age 30, Carthage, Jasper county, Missouri with wife at 114 Centennial, as salesman at stone quarry.

Husband Kent Darr Steadley was first president of March 1, 1927 newly formed Carthage Marble Corporation, created from his family's 300 acre plus five other local quarry's. His family then bought into Lacorni Marble company also took control of the Carthage Superior Spring Bed Manufacturing company, renaming it The Steadley Company so he shortly resigned his position at The Carthage Marble Corporation (Geo Busboom, the organizer, became 2nd president with his older brother John Busboom as general manager) to manage the new bed spring company, in 1928 re-located to east side of River street near Central avenue, in old Juvenile Shoe company's factory's building, just south of George Busboom's Nucarth Brick & Stone company.

K W Steadly owned shares of Saint Louis & San Francisco Railroad, (originally built in 1871 through early efforts of "Lon" Cunningham as Memphis, Carthage and Northwestern Railroad), it had before "Frisco" owned, during its receivership, assistant superintendent Maj Raphael Guido Rombaer 1874-1879, later, affectionately known as "The Frisco", dealing with Colonel Carl R Gray while he served six years (1890-1896), living in Carthage, part of his twenty-eight years with "Frisco", till 1911, and the old Carthage Superior Spring Bed company virtually at the time it was organized, in 1908, ~ ~ twenty some years later gaining control, renaming it The Steadley Company with son Kent, as afore stated, resigning as president of The Carthage Marble Corporation, becoming its manager. Factory had been in "Frisco" bottoms, and was damaged by a fire, ending on east side of River street, just south of Central in the old Juvenile Shoe factory's building in 1928, he signing the papers while in bed before his death. Nearly thirty years later, son Kent, after several enlargements & improvements, sold most shares 1 May 1957 to Lehigh Valley Coal Corporation, Inc of Wilmington, Castle county, Delaware with easterner, easterner, Roger Lawrence taking charge with Kent remaining on payroll, by contract, till 1959.

From his 4 JAN 1960 obituary in Carthage Press,

"Despite his removal to California, Mr Steadley retained his interests in Carthage and his Carthage friends and made frequent visits here.

"Mr Steadley long had been a member of the board of directors of the Bank of Carthage. He served five years as a member of the Board of Public Works and was active in forming the United Fund organization here.

"Mr Steadley made numerous gifts to McCune-Brooks hospital, Carthage Humane Society and to various charitable organizations."

They had last lived at 1645 Grand avenue in Carthage which he sold to Alfred D Locarni & wife when he moved to La Jolla, San Diego county, California to his hillside home overlooking the cove at La Jolla and Pacific ocean, shared with wife's long time friend and traveling companion, widow Mrs Helen Ayers, who was to become his private secretary, but his death prevented such. They had spent two years in Rancho Santa Fe, San Diego county, California prior to the La Jolla home.

Death: in La Jolla, San Diego county, California two months following wife's death.

The Carthage City Council met in regular session on the above date at 7:30 PM in the City Hall Council Chambers with Mayor James G. Woestman presiding. The invocation was given by Fire Chief John Cooper and the flag salute was led by Police Chief Greg Dagnan.

Mayor Woestman [his father W H Woestman, had been vice president in charge of production at the Steadley Company] reported on meetings he had attended since the last Council Meeting. The Mayor announced that the Chamber of Commerce recently honored as Citizens of the Year, Kent and Mary Steadley. The award was accepted by Shirley and Bob Locarni [s/o A D Locarni]. The Steadley Trust has provided up to 1959, over 22 million dollars to Carthage organizations and projects.
