Prominent Carthage Woman Long in Failing Health
Mrs. Stella V. Steadley, widow of F. W. Steadley, prominent Carthage industrialist, passed away at 5:25 o'clock morning in her apartment at the Drake Hotel.
Mrs. Steadley long had been in failing health. Suffered a stroke of paralysis 2 1/2 years ago that left her an invalid. At various times she had been a patient in McCune-Brooks Hospital. Since returning to her apartment more than a year ago Mrs. Steadley had been attended by nurses day and night. However, she was not confined to her bed. Yesterday morning she suffered a third and fatal stroke.
Mrs. Steadley, the former Miss Stella V. Hennesey, was born in Chicago, April 20, 1875. She and Mr. Steadley were married there more than 50 years ago and immediately came to Carthage to live.
Mr. Steadley, a veteran quarryman, came to Carthage in 1890 from Lexington, Missouri. Through his leadership in the development of the Carthage marble industry some 40 years ago, he established himself as one of the city's greatest industrial leaders. His success gained him prominence and recognition throughout the industry. His first connection with the marble industry was in 1899 when he became a stockholder in the Carthage Quarry company, which started with the total of 10 acres. He became manager of the company in 1907. This later became the F. W. Steadley and Company, Inc. of which he was head. In 1927 the Steadley marble holdings, along with other marble firms were purchased and consolidated by the newly formed Carthage Marble corporation. At that time the Steadley company was perhaps the largest operator in the Carthage Marble industry. Mr. Steadley died April 9, 1928.
Mr. Steadley became stockholder in the old Carthage Spring Bed company (sic), now The Steadley Company virtually at the time it was organized in 1908. The Steadley Company now is headed by Kent D. Steadley, under whose guidance it has made remarkable growth.
Mr. and Mrs. Steadley moved into the Drake as soon as it was built. He also passed away there. The step-son, K. D. Steadley, is the closest survivor of Mrs. Steadley. Another step-son, R. P. Steadley, died in 1949. Mrs. J. F. Irish, daughter of R. P. Steadley lives on South Main.
Funeral services were held at the Knell service home Rev. Eugene G. Malcolm, rector of Grace Episcopal church officiated.

When her heir, Kent Darr Steadley, died in 1960 "....the Bank of Carthage became trustee of the residuary estate of Mrs Steadley with its income to be turned over to Carthage charitable and educational organizations"
