Helen was born July 28, 1917 in Spruce Grove Township, Beltrami County, MN the daughter of Thomas and Bertha (Paskewitz) Knutson. When she was 16, she graduated from Thief River Falls High School and then attended normal school. She married Halvor Reise on June 11, 1938 near Grygla, MN.

Helen (Knutson) Reise started her teaching career when she was 18 years old at Medicine Lake School, north of Bemidji. She was a substitute teacher for many years in the Bemidji area (Carr Lake School and Wolf Lake School) as well as many others.

Helen was a multi-faceted woman; raising a family of four children, managing a Laundromat, bookkeeper for her husband Halvor’s construction business, as well as bookkeeper for the Westwood Trailer Court, which they owned.

She was one of the founding members of the Bemidji Figure Skating Club and was a great supporter of hockey in Bemidji. Her passion was Social Bridge and Duplicate Bridge, which she had played since she was 12 years old. She had many wonderful friends in the Bridge world, and earned many honors and awards. Helen was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Bemidji for more than 70 years and served on many committees within that church. She was also a member of the Bemidji Women’s Club for many years.

Watching the Minnesota Twins was one of her favorite things to do in her later years. She always raised a wonderful garden full of vegetables and flowers, which she loved sharing with family and friends. She was 94 when she had to give up her garden.

Our mother always enjoyed visits from her children and grandchildren, and she was a prominent force in our lives. She also enjoyed times spent with her many friends, and loved when they would stop by.

She is survived by her children, Wanda (Robert) Odegard of Bemidji, Shirley (Ernest) Ashley of Englewood, FL, Terri (Ron) Otterstad of Bemidji, and Tom (Kristi) Reise of Bemidji; eight grandchildren, Kristi Odegard of Mendota Heights, MN, Todd (Kelli) Odegard of Savage, MN, Jacob (Chris) Ashley of Murfeesboro, TN, Jacquelyn (Vincenzo) Neglia of San Vito dei Normanni, Italy, Jon Otterstad of Bemidji, Thea Otterstad of Bloomington, MN, Kate (Josh Faecke) Reise of Minneapolis, MN, and Mitch Reise of Duluth MN; three great grandchildren, Zach and Jennifer Odegard of Savage, MN, and Grace Neglia of San Vito dei Normanni, Italy.
