James Monroe Pendleton was born January 10, 1841 in Caldwell County, Kentucky to William Monroe Pendleton and Nancy Anney Dunning-Pendleton. He was about five years of age when his parents left Kentucky and moved to Lawrence County, Missouri. He grew up on a farm in the Turnback Township.

He married Mary Jane Reynolds daughter of Benjamin Ladd Reynolds and Mary Catherine Thompson-Reynolds on August 1, 1861 at Turnback Township, Lawrence County, Missouri and together they had seven children.

James Monroe was a Union Soldier during the Civil War. He was a private in Company A, 76 Regiment, ordered into service at Mt. Vernon by General Brown, August 19, 1862 and relieved from duty on March 31, 1863 by General Holland with additional duty from September 25, 1864 to November 15, 1864, making a total of 229 days of service. G.A.R. No. 141 is engraved on his headstone.

After the death of Mary Jane, James remarried on September 29, 1894 in Lawrence County, Missouri to Widow Malissa P. Hopkins-Johnson, born 21 July 1839 and died November 17, 1902 and is buried in Ogle Cemetery in Missouri. Malissa died from Tuberculosis - Consumption.

James died November 29, 1918 in Chesapeake, Lawrence County, Missouri and is buried next to his first wife, Mary Jane at the Dover Baptist Church Cemetery, Lawrence County, Missouri. James died from Tuberculosis.
