Mary Catherine Dunning was born November 3, 1825 in Caldwell County, Kentucky to Naum Dunning and Mary "Polly" Hughey-Dunning.

Naum Dunning, was born in 1798 in Pitt County, North Carolina, and died April 1836, Caldwell County, Kentucky. He was the son of Jesse Dunning, Jr., born in 1774 in Bertie County, North Carolina, died August 1836, and his wife, Atha, born in 1774 in North Carolina, died April 4, 1852 in Caldwell County, Kentucky. Jesse was the son of Jesse Dunning, Sr., born in 1736 in North Carolina, died in 1813 in Caldwell County, and his wife Patience.

Mary's parents were married November 28, 1819 in Caldwell County, Kentucky. A few years after the death of Naum, Mary "Polly", the daughter of John Hughey (born in 1764, died in 1837), was married on January 30, 1844 in Caldwell County, to William K. West. Mary was born April 1, 1797 in North Carolina, died August 6, 1880 in Lawrence County, Missouri, and is buried in the Dover Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mary Catherine married Daniel Lester in the year of 1842 in Caldwell County, Kentucky and after her father's death, her mother "Polly" remarrying to William K. West in 1844.
By 1860, her mother and step-father are living with her and her husband Daniel in Lawrence County, Missouri. Mary Catherine and Daniel Lester, had moved to Missouri at the same time as William and Nancy Anney Dunning-Pendleton. Nancy was Mary Catherine's sister and "Polly's" daughter.

Daniel and Mary "Catherine" Dunning-Lester are buried together in Dover Baptist Cemetery, Lawrence County, Missouri.
