WALNUT COVE - Mrs. Leona Esther Rothrock Porter, 95, died Thursday, February 24, 2011 at Walnut Ridge Assisted Living. She was born September 26, 1915 in Stokes County to Emory Augustus and Sadie Eliza Wall Rothrock. Leona was an exceptional homemaker, known for her excellence in cooking and her delicate needlework. She was employed as a social worker by Stokes County Community Action and as a nutritionist by Stokes County Agricultural Extension. A 3 p.m. Memorial Service will be held Sunday, February 27, 2011 at Stokesburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bruce Updyke officiating. Inurnment will follow at Walnut Cove Cemetery. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ivil Lawson Porter, Jr. on October 2, 1973, She is survived by three children: Cynthia Porter Smith and husband, Ethan of Monroe, Ivil Lawson Porter, III and wife Charlene of Winston-Salem and Pamela Porter Snare and husband Jerry of Nashville, TN.. The family will receive friends after the interment at Stokesburg United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Stokes County, Po Box 863, Walnut Cove, NC 27052 or to Stokesburg United Methodist Church, PO Box 521, Walnut Cove, NC 27052.
