George was the third child of Decatur and Mariah Louisa Grubb. He married Rosa M. Clark in 1893 and they had four children before she died in 1895. The youngest three children, Louis, John B., and Franklin, lived in Zanesville at the McIntyre Children's Home in 1900. George remarried to Emma Jefferys of Columbus in 1917.
