I was born August 17, 1934. My parents were George and Luella (Hulme) Halupnik. I attended Clark Township Number Three School for four years and then completed my elementary and secondary education at the Traer Public Schools. While growing up on the farm three miles east of Traer, my playmates were Jack Martin, Bill Danker, Jim and Jack Keese. Softball, football and basketball seemed to provide many hours of activity with this group of young boys.
The highlight of the year would usually come when the shipment of fireworks would arrive at the train depot. Fortunately we all managed to retain our eyesight and fingers. The summer softball league operated by Carl Wilson was a real special program. As you signed up you would vote for a captain. The elected captains would then have a "draft" of players. We would play on Monday and Wednesday evenings before the adult league. Carl would have a banquet each year at the end of the season honoring the winning team, best hitter and best fielder. It wasn't until years later that Carl's sacrificial giving was truly appreciated. High school soon followed and sports continued to dominate my life.
The coaching of Ivan Kibbie, Reece Lambert and Don Lenth usually kept you tired and out of trouble. Teachers such as Miss Moeller, Miss Harold, Miss Stark, Mr. Kuehl and others set good examples that patterned many lives. The high school dances sponsored by the Legion kept us off the streets on Friday nights. (well most of the time).
My first car was a 1941 Chevrolet five passenger coupe. My uncle Ern had purchased it shortly before being drafted. It was stored in the barn while Ern was in the army and I would spend many hours sitting in it wishing it were mine. Finally years later it was purchased as "Mom's" car. Jack Nagle installed a radio and I was set for many years.
Most spare time was spent at Harry Evert's pool hall. Sneaking in a game of pool on the wide pocket table at the rear of the building was one of the first steps of adulthood. Nothing tasted better after a two hour football practice than a cold glass of root beer with a package of Planters Peanuts floating in it.
Many years have passed since those days, but the memories of climbing the winding stairs for the first time, Saturday night movies, waiting for the 9 o'clock train, trips back to Waterloo after the Jr-Sr Prom, malts at the Dairy Bar, summer Carnivals, parking on Ridge Road (no names mentioned) and many other events, leave me with warm feelings.
College, the Army and jobs took me away from the area for fifteen years. Twenty years ago we decided to leave the turmoil of the large city and return to Iowa. Marty and I are pleased that our daughters were able to grow up in an area similar to our experience. Two of the times we look forward to each year are the Halupnik Family reunion and Czech Days. Time with family and friends is very special.
Growing up in a community like Traer is something I will always cherish. The encouragement, friendship and discipline that was expressed continues to stay with me.
