Mrs. Eskridge was known throughout all of Prentiss County and north Mississippi for her numerous contributions to the educational field and to the children of our state. Born in Booneville in 1909, she graduated Booneville High School and received her degree in Elementary Education from Mississippi University for Women where she was a member of the Black List social club. She furthered her studies by receiving a master's degree from Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn. She taught elementary school in various towns in North Mississippi before returning to Booneville where she served as Supervisor of Education. Later in life, she served as head director of the MUW Demonstration School and taught at Blue Mountain College.
She returned to Booneville as head of the Psychology Department at Northeast Mississippi Junior College where she remained until her retirement in 1974. Mrs. Eskridge once said that her life had been so blessed and that she "never met a student that she did not like." Following retirement, she spent her days working in her garden, spending time with her beloved sister, Maxine, and canning tomatoes with her dear friend Jean Downs. But anyone who knew Mrs. Eskridge knew that her entire life was dedicated to her daughter, Willdora and her two granddaughters and four great‑ grandchildren. They were indeed the light of her life.
She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Booneville where she taught Sunday School and was in charge of the Methodist Youth. Prior to moving to Gulfport to live with her daughter, she was a member of the Volunteer Club Sunday School Class, the Booneville Study Club and was an avid bridge player.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Alexander and Willie Dora Fugitt Cook, a daughter Carolyn Maxine Eskridge and two brothers, T. A. Cook, Jr. and William Thomas Cook.
She is survived by one daughter, Willdora Eskridge Kremer of Gulfport; two grand-daughters, Rebecca Kremer Kajdan of Gulfport and Susan Kremer Jones of Rosewell, Georgia: and four great‑grandchildren, Thomas Alexander Kajdan and Harrison Kremer Kajdan of Gulfport and Jonathan Kremer Jones and Mary Hanley Jones of Roswell, Georgia; one sister, Maxine Smith of Booneville.
Visitation with Mrs. Eskridge's family will be held at McMillan Funeral Home in Booneville on Saturday, January 6, 2001, beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a memorial service, at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu, of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First United Methodist Church New Life Center.
