Basil (Biagio) Christ Bucaro Sr., 83, of Evansville, died Thursday, Apr. 10, 2003, at Deaconess Hospital.

He was born on May 4, 1919, in Chicago, Ill., to Andrew and Anna (Stipati) Bucaro.

Basil was a baker and had worked in Las Vegas, Chicago, Colorado and Terre Haute, Ind. During the late 1940s, he owned his own neighborhood bakery in Chicago. He and his wife usually could be found baking delicious bread, sweet rolls and cakes throughout the night. In 1992, he was the sweepstakes winner of the Healthful Recipe Contest at the Indiana State Fair. Basil began his baking skills with the U.S. Army during World War II.

Basil was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Terre Haute, Ind., and attended St. Anthony Catholic Church in Evansville. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree and Honor Guard.

He was preceded in death by his parents; by his first wife, Angeline (Scianna), in 1963; by his second wife, Laura G., in 2000, by his sister, Frances Giachelli of Chicago; and by his brother, Frank Bucaro of Bartlett, Ill.

Surviving are his daughters, Lucille McCraw of Evansville, Anna Ryan of Chicago and Laura Juntunen of Portage, Wis.; his sons, Basil Bucaro Jr. of Adams, Wis., Andrew Bucaro of Adams and Anthony Bucaro of Portage; his grandsons, David McCraw of Russellville, Ky., and Jeffrey and Michael McCraw, both of Evansville; his great-grandchildren, Justin, Joshua, Ryan, Bode and Jordan McCraw; his sisters, Liboria Irving of Henderson, Nev., and Anna Nash of Nokomis, Ill.; his brother, Joseph Bucaro of Chicago; and his nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Apr. 18, 2003, at Miller & Miller Colonial Chapel, Franklin & Heidelbach, the Rev. Ted Tempel officiating, with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, with military rites.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Apr. 17, 2003, at the funeral home. Miller & Miller Colonial Chapel, 219 E. Franklin St. is in charge of the arrangements.
