Notes for LILLIE IRENE LOONEY:
On Dec 8, 1906, Lillie Looney at the age 15 married Jesse Sampson, age 20 in a double wedding with Newton
Pate and Nellie Gwin in the yard of Albert Newton.

At the age of 17, her first of six children was born.
Then in 1924, at the age of 33, tragedy struck her household, with her husband, Jesse being killed in a work accident.

Living in the 19th district of Carroll County at the time of the accident, she was a widow with six children, the
oldest child 16 years old and the youngest two being 2 and 4 years old.

Following the accident and death of her husband, Lillie purchased a farm in Weakley County, Tennessee, moving
her family there sometime between 1924 and 1930 census. It was also during this time she endured another
tragedy when her seven year old daughter, Mildred, died from pneumonia.

Her daughter, Opal, says "I was young
at the time and just remember us moving. I don't know if Mom got a settlement from daddy's accident or how she
came up with the money to buy the farm or why she chose this particular area to move to."

Raising her family here on the farm along with her children helping with the farming, she provided a living for
them.. By the end of 1938 all the children had married, leaving her alone to tend the farm.

It was then she broke up housekeeping, and began living with the children, each one about three months at a time, helping to care for the grandchildren and helping with the household chores.

It was in her late years of her life, she made her home
permament with her oldest daughter, Elsie.

When in her late 60's and early 70's, Lillie worked in a nursing home, sitting with the ones that needed special
care. This job enabled her to pay into the social security system, making her eligible to draw a Social Security
pension check each month and to have Medicare for medical purposes, the remainder of her life.

Lillie was fortune to have good health, except for having both hips broken and repaired. This happened at
different times in her life, therefore, it was not until after the last one did she use a cane or walker to help her get around.
For someone her age, her mind, eye sight and hearing was really not bad. Her health seem to really
decline after the lost of two of her children in one year. It was the same year that she suffered a stroke and died
within twelve days being 97 years old.
